Realistically everyone would choose the person they're dating, if it's the only person they have a genuine connection with. Who really cares about Lois Pasture, when put next to Lady Gaga, some random guy with a beard or the girl they just started sleeping with... Under pressure for sure most people would choose whoever they're most intimate with to save.

Not knowing what they were being executed for makes a huge impact upon the decision. Why can you only pick one? Is it limited time on breaking them out of somewhere because their locations in their prison could be an important factor as well. If multiple people were to come together maybe breaking them all out of prison could give the odds of saving more than one person could increase. But without knowing all these other factors to influence my decision & only choosing someone at random, I would make up a group to decide as a whole. Scientist are the obvious option if you are thinking of the future. But saving the father could have an impact on the future of the children. What could their potential future be like. They could be a better scientist that the first scientist. They could become a world leader or a doctor that could change something in the medical field that could change the lives of billions of people. Or not saving dad could put the children into a destructive pattern which could lead them becoming terrorists. What could his future grandchildren, great grandchildren etc do. Essentially you could use this argument for all the options.

Easier said than done. Human nature is such that we care more about ourselves than anyone else. Almost all humans in this situation would choose to save the person they have recently begun dating.
