Who says you can’t use Doug Fir in furniture (same as 2x4 lumber)??

Me. I am the one who says you don’t use fir to build furniture. But maybe I was wrong.

I used Doug fir and southern yellow pine to build my kid a desk four years ago when everything shut down. It came out pretty cool. Wasn't for a customer though.

Douglas Fir is absolutely great for furniture. I have seen furniture made from pine older than the first settlements over in your country. Half the Alps were furnished with it in medieval times. Douglas Fir is hard as a rock compared to pine. I also like the look, but that is subjective. Pine sits at a hardness of 13, Douglas Fir at 20 and birch at 23 for comparison. It's a pretty hearty wood!

Douglas fir has not only been used in furniture, but Ken Parker has been using it in $70k archtop guitars for decades

I’ve been in countless 100 year old craftsman homes in Portland with old growth Doug fir floors, Millwork, and built ins. So much so that I associate fir with high quality craftsmanship. Doug fir is awesome.

I had a question – I have used this type of lumber for workbench frames, and there is not much movement after you let it dry out and then you plane/joint it. I have thought of using this lumber as a substrate and using a shop sawn veneer over it with a different species of wood – I wonder how that would work out?

Quality VG fir or Alaskan yellow cedar can make for some amazing furniture. Excited to see what you do!

My wife has a ton of property in Oregon with acres and acres of Douglas fir. My dream is to go up there someday and build something with some of it.

You can use it, but it won't look good after a few dents(experienced Doug fir user)

We used DF for flooring - everyone thought us nuts as it's so soft, until we had a party with the ladies wearing spike heels and the gents in cleats, moving naturally throughout the room. The dimpled effect was incredibly cool! (and the cost was cheap!)

It’s also fascinating to burn, milk paint and sand back through. The deep lines hold the milk paint while the higher burned lines add contrast if not sanded too heavily.

I read recently that plants may “scream” when cut, so…. I guess fir is murder.

It does have striking grain....

Adhering to the basic rules of moisture content, knots, etc, and the correct joinery, you can build most anything from SPF material. My great grandfather built using SPF or cedar only, for interior and exterior builds, 60+ years later, I can still find a solid piece he built.

I use it all the time I salvage beautiful old growth Doug fur and reuse it for furniture I get it for free and it's getting diverted from the landfill it's a win-win. Some years ago they tore down this mansion in downtown San Diego built in 1915. The framing was all old growth Doug fur 20 f t long full dimension 2x4s all clear vertical grain really beautiful wood.
