The response to my video analysing Chell and what her backstory may be has been absolutely incredible to see - 50,000 VIEWS in ONE DAY! For a video that I was worried would be super controversial due to how it tackles the Chell Backstory question in a way that avoids falling into the same repeated theories of “Chell Johnson” or similar popular fandom interpretations, you people absolutely knocked it out of the park with the support and intrigue!

There’s a few stuff about the video I do wish I handled better - such as my editing during the quick cut-in about the Portal RTX Clipboard on Subject #234 when I had the RTX clipboard both ingame and it’s actual texture side-by-side leading to people mistaking the ingame RTX clipboard for the original Portal one, (despite the fact seconds earlier I had literally shown the original Portal 1 clipboard) or the possibility of going a bit more indepth on why Chell Johnson is a fundamentally flawed theory (according to Ellen McClain herself!), but all across the board, I feel really happy seeing people’s interest in what I had presented!

Ultimately, the video isn’t perfect - Portal’s Lore itself is very shallow and it’s depth comes from it’s vagueness, leading to fan interpretations filling in the gap, so even if someone followed the exact steps I took in my analysis, I doubt the same conclusion would’ve been reached! Seeing people’s potential explanations and interpretations in the comments of what happened to Chell’s adoptive father especially is one huge part of that.

re: Chell Johnson Let me go through my points against the theory from my strongest to weakest, I don’t plan on bringing up the topic again unless absolutely necessary, so consider this your one-stop shop to see my counter-evidence to Chell Johnson: - Cara Mia Addio has been confirmed by Ellen McClain through Mike Morasky, composer for Portal 2, that the lyrics for the song are italian gibberish, indicating that Ellen was improvising the lyrics on the fly as she sung. The only intended lyrics are “I’m going to miss you, goodbye my beloved.” No mention of calling Chell her child at any point. This can be read in the Portal 2 Official Guide. SOURCE: pbs.twimg.com/media/F5vyuYAaAAAva__?format=jpg&nam… - There are scrapped lines from the Core Transfer sequence in an early iteration, when GLaDOS would yell at Chell to stop, because she claims to be her mother, only for GLaDOS to immediately follow it up with “That’s not true, but it could be!”. The line reads more like a reference to the “I am your father” moment in Star Wars and the lines were made prior to Caroline becoming a character in Portal 2’s plot, indicating that this line was written as a joke. SOURCE: tcrf.net/Portal_2/Unused_Lines - GLaDOS does not “become nicer as PotatOS because she remembers being Chell’s mom”, she went through a character arc. She began to warm up to Chell when the two were forced to team up against Wheatley and put aside their differences. GLaDOS’s character arc culminates with her beginning to see Chell as an equal to her in the ending of Portal 2 and just lets her leave the facility as keeping Chell in Aperture causes problems for her, constantly. This was why I made the “media illerate” jab in the video at Chell Johnson believers. - Even disregarding the PotatOS Science Kit, there is no logistical way for Chell to be the daughter of Cave & Caroline. The Portal 2 Official Guide also has Erik Wolpaw - writer of Portal 2 - state that Cave and Caroline are not a couple. Furthermore, Cave Johnson and Caroline are Americans, and as I went over in the video, Chell is Japanese-Brazillian. While it is possible for Chell to have been adopted, the timeline for that happening is incredibly small and makes it quite messy, as there’s a lot of logistical factors to take in such as Cave’s illness and eventual death, what happened to Caroline after Cave died (with the creation of GLaDOS), and if it’d even add anything to the story, which I don’t see as anything meaningful.

I'm writing a movie adaptation of the Portal series and you did even more research on Chell's back story than me - or at least enough for me to find your video quite helpful. Great job, well done.
