Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell

The circle of life never ends.

When a whale dies, it sinks to the bottom of the ocean and creates a phenomenon called a “whale fall”. Through several stages of decomposition, the whale’s body provides food for all the living beings hidden at the bottom of the ocean, from scavengers like sharks to opportunists like crabs. There are plenty of valuable nutrients for everyone in this newly formed “oasis”. The ecosystem this event creates can last for years before the nutrients run out. Finally, the whale’s skeleton reaches its “reef” stage, where suspension feeders use its hard surface to attach themselves. It stays there as a monument and a reminder that even though a life coming to an end is sad, in nature it never goes in vain. Because the end of one cycle is also the beginning of many new ones.

Whoever posted this deserves a lot of credit for being articulate and providing something so well written. What could have easily been written off as the Disneyfied "circle of life" is beautiful in its own right.

You're telling me the same people who covered an entire video on the end of the universe are saying, "Life never ends."

Gorgeously said and extremely well-written, that last line really hits hard; it's impossible to not be ammused by Kurzgesagt from time to time, even if it's not their videos and instead, just an artwork with a text. Now I'd like a similar example with lions and antilopes :p

I Actually wrote a poem about that a few months ago; "Whalefall" Look upon this wreckage of a giant, This colossal sunken beast. Not very long ago it traversed entire oceans, With the grace of a butterfly, and the might of a mountain. See it now, a carcass lying in the sand of the cold abyss, Where time is but a rumor, and light is a thing of legends. Look upon the vastness of this specimen, a miracle of nature, as its flesh recedes, Revealing a ribcage as grand as a palace. But be patient, wait and see; The scavengers arrive. At first only the bold dare come, And then great and small, They fill the desolate scene with hues you never fathomed. A school of fish feasts upon a fin, An eel seeks refuge where a heart used to pound. The site is bustling, In death's dominion, life prevails.

This reminds me of the whale in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy that just exists when the Heart of Gold teleports to it just falls for like 2 minutes and contemplates its existence.

I thought whale carcasses would just be finished in a couple of days or weeks. Didn't actually know they could sustain an ecosystem for years. I'm amazed.
