Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell

The biggest photobomb in the Universe!

When we look deep into space, a massive object is blocking 20% of our view.
It’s the Milky Way's disk - its gas and dust absorb or reflect light from beyond its edge, so it never reaches us.

Astronomers warned each other of this blind alley by calling it Zone of Avoidance. And as it happens, all the famous pictures of the deep cosmos come from above or below the Milky Way’s plane. Recent developments in telescopes helped to narrow the zone down to 10% – so who knows, maybe one day we’ll get to see our cosmic neighbors at eye level.
